About This Item

1920. Early days in Fentress County, TN, are recalled in this spiral bound booklet a reprint of the 1920 book: History of Fentress County Tennessee (World War Memorial Edition) by A.R. Hogue. The 166-page booklet, which includes an index, is printed on 8.5 x 11" 60# paper. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. The booklet begins with a salute to World War I veterans, especially Alvin York, the most decorated soldier of the war, and recipient of the Medal of Honor. This section has been added to the original history printed in 1916, which follows. It includes: a description of the county, the surface and area, first settlers; Jamestown, the county seat, and its peculiarities, the courthouse and jail; Mark Twain's description of Jamestown (Obedstown) in "Gilded Age; Fentress County in the Civil War--Fourth Tennessee Cavalry - CSA, Gen. Joe Wheeler's Raid in 1863, Fourth Tennessee in Georgia, Sherman's March to the Sea, the Surrender, Major Scott Bledsoe, Union Commands and Commanders, the Second East Tennessee Volunteer Infantry (Union); Cruel deeds during the war; Other wars; Indians; William Bledsoe fined for calling Marsha Millsaps a witch; and another claim of witchcraft. There are biographies of varying lengths of many county residents of yesteryear. While principally of interest to descendants, these bios sometimes shed light on early businesses and events.
