First edition, first impression, 1852. Bindings a little shabby but internally very good. Half black calf with raised bands and gilt ruling to spines. Marbled paper boards with light wear. Marbled page edges and plain endpapers. Armorial bookplate of John Buchanan-Hamilton, Laird of Leny, Scotland, to front pastedown of Vol. I and his signature to each ffep. A few very minor marks and spots to front and back matter but contents o/w clean without inscriptions, foxing or other markings. A good set despite the outer wear, and the fine internal condition makes this a great candidate for rebinding. Additional photos available on request. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Alongside 'Vanity Fair', 'Henry Esmond' is widely considered to be Thackeray's greatest work. This first edition was printed in an antique typeface and with antique spelling. Heavy Set.
