Philadelphia: The Jewish Publication Society of America, 1920. First edition. Hardcover. Very good -. 3 volumes. 8vo. 414; 430; 412pp.. Original dark green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. This monumental work of Jewish history covers Jewish life in Eastern Europe from medieval origins to the year 1911. Written in reaction to the Russian pogroms of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, much of the book's focus is on 19th century Czarist policy towards Jews, to which the author took a highly negative view of. A mixed condition set: extremities of spine of Vol. I a bit frayed; gilt lettering on spine of Vol. II a bit dulled; head of spine of Vol. IIi slightly rubbed. Simon Markovich Dubnow (1860-1941) was a Russian Jewish historian and ideologist. He was one of the founders of the Jewish Historico-Ethnographical Society. In 1941 he met a tragic end when he was killed by the Nazis.
