About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1863. An early printing of Abbott's popular work on the life of Julius Caesar With a fine colour illuminated title-page gilt burnished from a design by Gwilt Mapleson, and 12 engraved illustrations, some within the text and some on plates, this printing apparently not bound with the map of Rome called for in the table of contents. 8vo, publisher's blind embossed red cloth gilt lettered on the spine and with gilt Greek-key motif at the spine tips. viii, 278 pp. Internally a fresh, clean, and solid copy, the paper very well preserved, the binding is solid and the red is not faded, a slight bit of age evidence and rubbing to the extremities. A pleasing copy. ONE OF JACOB ABBOTT'S POPULAR BIOGRAPHIES WRITTEN FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. While his clear and distinct writing style made his works suitable for a young audience his books are intended for those with a degree of maturity, as he does not skimp on the facts or their implications. A prolific author, JULIUS CAESAR is one of 22 historic biographies written over a period of roughly twenty years. In all he authored or co-authored over 200 books, many of which were novels or novellas.
