As correspondent for The Times at Trebizond Oliphant met the Turkish commander Omar Pasha, joined his force and was present at the battle of the Ingour. A first hand valuable account of Ottoman military operations from both a political and military point of view.

First American edition of this book. Published by T. Allen, New York, 1792. Binding is fine. Modern half leather and marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. Interior is very good. Has a few stamps from New York Mercantile Library. Edges show foxing, interior is toned, occasional old creases, no vandalism, writing or other issues. Pages remain supple. Lacking old blanks, otherwise complete as issued. Lee was a British born career military officer who sought to lead the Continental Army in place of Washington. Lee is most famous now for his various hasty and leisurely retreats including being captured in his night gown by the British in 1776. After a prisoner exchange in 1778 Lee resumed command only to be court-martialled a few months later for insubordination. He must have had something going for him because he survived 30 years of military encounters where strategic withdrawal was not always an option. He was appointed to devise improved systems of detection, communication and control. A system to be called the Metropolitan Observation Service was created which covered the London area and was known as the London Air Defence Area.On 29 October 1925 the Observer Corps came into official existence. The volume containing specifications of the work to be undertaken, manuscript notes, calculations and specifications and also, on stout paper, many fine large folding drawings in pen & ink and watercolour of the W. door of South School, Brompton Barracks, a drainage system, a floor design, house design, a hutment scheme, and a steel bridge design, etc. Many marked with the examiner’s notes and comments in red ink. Folio, contemporary full blue morocco lettered in gilt on upper cover, “Fowke Medal 1910. R. E. 2nd Lieutenant J.W.J. Raikes R.E.” The Fowke medal awarded to the top student of the Clerk of Works course. Francis Fowke (1823-1865) the architect of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and a Captain in the Corps of Royal Engineers.

This history of the 71st Regiment of the National Guard of the State of New York is based on the Regimental Minute Book from 1861 to 1870, New York newspaper accounts, scrap books, interviews with veterans, a journal and diary kept by Sgt. J. T. Woolsey, and official reports of officers during the Civil War. Very scarce.
