1680 King Edward 1ed Medieval England Gaveston Despenser FOLIO Cary PROVENANCE

Edward II of England was an early 14th-century king of England best-remembered for his political turmoil which arose from his relationships with Piers Gaveston and Hugh Despenser. Edward gave unwarranted privileges to these nobles (who had significant wealth and influence) – an act that angered other barons. So much so, that these other nobles executed Gaveston for his actions to the king. Edward's relationships with these men caused his reign to be one of the most tumultuous reigns of medieval England.

Author Henry Cary wrote an important 17th-century survey of Edward II's reign which focused primarily on the rise and fall of his two closest allies – Gaveston and Despenser.

o Armorial bookplate – Earl of Ormonde and Ossory

The peerage title Earl of Ormond (or Ormonde) and its related titles have a long and complex history, with the earldom of Ormond being created three times in the Peerage of Ireland. Since its creation, the earls have taken significant roles in the government and military of Ireland and kept a tradition of loyalty to the English crown and to English custom. Its complications began in 1528, when Henry VIII pressured Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond, 1st Earl of Ossory (c. 1467–1539) to rescind all claims on the earldom in order to gift them to Thomas Boleyn, the father of Anne Boleyn. Though the titles were eventually restored to Butler's lineage, fierce debates and battles were fought over claims to the titles, which only became more confusing Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond and 3rd Earl of Ossory KG PC (c. 1531–1614), or "Black Tom," who was an influential courtier in London at the court of Elizabeth I, passed without a legitimate male heir. This bookplate possibly belongs to John Butler, 17th Earl of Ormonde, 10th Earl of Ossory (1740–1795), an Irish peer and Member of Parliament (MP), who officially reclaimed both titles with the acknowledgement of the Irish House of Lords in 1791. Description:
1822 Famous 2ed David Porter Journal USS Essex Battle of Valparaiso War of 1812

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.

1537 1ed Orthodox Saint John Chrysostom On the Priesthood + Brixius Marburg

A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.
"Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz)

One of his most important treatises was 'On the Priesthood' in which he describes his experiences becoming a priest and living as a priest. Interestingly, this work was popular during his lifetime as he made references to it in his other works.
This extremely rare 16th-century edition of 'On the… Read More

Description:
1774 William Shakespeare PLAYS Illustrated Theatre Julius Caesar Winters Tale 3v

"The remarkable thing about Shakespeare is that he is really very good - in spite of all the people who say he is very good."
– Robert Graves

A rare set of the plays of William Shakespeare. This three-volume lot includes some of the most famous works of Shakespearean theatre, including A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, and Julius Caesar. The plays in this collection are 'acting versions' of the staged plays, and according to Ritchie and Sabor,
"this edition offers a valuable record of the ways in which the plays were being altered at the time, with an introductory advertisement justifying this practice." (Ritchie & Sabor, p.397)
John Bell, the publisher of this landmark set, provided a "read-along guide to contemporary theatrical display with direct references to the performance of Shakespeare on the contemporary stage, it had commercial appeal." (R&S, p.232).

1623 John Wemyss The Christian Synagogue JUDAISM in Scotland Hebrew Temple RARE

John Wemyss was an early 17th-century Scottish clergyman who was much better known for his studies in Hebrew exegesis. He is widely considered to be the pioneering Jewish scholar in Scotland, much in part to this advocating for Jewish culture in Scotland. In 1623, Wemyss, also spelled Weemes, published his first work of Judaica, 'The Christian Synagogue'. In this book, Weemes focuses on the customs of both the ancient Hebrews and modern Jews and the many Europeans that have converted to Judaism. There is a heavy emphasis on prayer and sacrifice throughout this book. According to Culotta, Weemes compares the use of prayer and sacrifice in both the Hebrew temple and the Hebrew synagogue.

This book also contains descriptions of the Old Testament Hebrew temple as well as the Temple of Jerusalem as it was during the time of Moses.
