About This Item

1744 RUSSIA Life of Catherine II the Great Mottley MAP St Petersburg ENGLISH 2v

Catherine II was an 18th-century Empress of Russia, who is better known today as Catherine the Great. It was under her reign than Russian gained prominence in Europe and entered the Golden Age of Russia or the 'Catherinian Era'.

English writer John Mottley published two works on the history of Russia – on the lives of Peter the Great and Empress Catherine II. The latter focuses on the entirety of the Russian empire from its earliest times through the reign of Catherine II. Mottley describes:

· the Russia's 16th-century correspondence with John III of Sweden

· life and death of Czar Theodore (Feodor I)

· deposition of Augustus II, King of Poland

· building and growth of St. Petersburg
