About This Item

Illustrated but notoriously difficult book to find with all five plates engravings. Two of the plates are present but not attached to the book. Most copies are missing at least two plates.
The History of that Most Victorious Monarch Edward III King of England and France and Lord of IrelandTogether with Edward sirnamed The Black Prince by Joshua Barnes. Cambridge: Printed by John Hayes for the Author, MDCLXXXVIII (1688) Contains the frontispiece of King Edward III in ceremonial garb, a plate of Edward III in armor, Plate of Don Pedro. Unattached by present are the plate of the Black Prince in ceremonial armor, and a portrait of the author Joshua Barnes.
A huge folio, 911-page history of the Hundred Years War between England and France focusing on King Edward III and his son Edward the Black Prince during the 14th century. Truth the history began when William Duke of Normandy became the Conqueror by taking England. For about the next 300 to 400 years, there was intermittent war between England and France which climaxed in the 14th century (aka the 1300's) with what became known as the Hundred Years War.
Size, Binding: Large folio, measuring 14.5 x 9 x 2" (37 x 23 x 5 cm). Original boards with later nicely enacted beige leather spine, possibly circa 1800 with end-papers present. Binding is very solid.
Collation: Blank end-paper, frontispiece of King Edward III in royal ceremonial garb, title page (i), Dedication (ii), Preface (iii-iv), The Contents (v-xiii), errata (xiv) Main text complete (1-911), plate of Edward III in full body armor between 582 and 583, and plate of Don Pedro in full body armor between 706 and 707, ends with "Soli Deo Gloria" and "Finis". Complete. As mentioned two plates, one of Edward the Black Prince in ceremonial armor and a portrait of the author are included but not within the book itself.

Condition: Overall a very good if not near fine example. Most of the pages have typical toning but almost NO foxing which is common with this book and some the engravings do appear to have impressed on the flanking pages. But no major tearing or chips to any of the pages. The plate of the Black Prince is very clean and nearly the same size as the book relaid on similar rag/laid paper at some point. The portrait of Barnes is somewhat smaller and has some toning. Both are laid in at the front inside archival slip.
NOTE: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The picture are NOT stock photos.)

IMPORTANT NOTE: All sales are generally FINAL. I do NOT accept returns because of buyer's remorse, "it was a gift but the recipient already had it", or "I found the same book(s) at a better price". Prices are carefully considered based on auction records and demand. Returns are only accepted because of significant discrepancies regarding edition and/or condition of which I try to be very thorough in researching the edition/printing as well as describing ALL condition issues. So make sure you're 100% positive you desire one of my items before making a purchase.

Shipping: Free priority mail shipping in the US, large flat-rate box Canada $75, and $110 UK and international.
