About This Item

1904. Early days in Newton County, ,are explored through a mixture of historical events and colorful tales in this reprint of History of Newton county, Mississippi, from 1834 to 1894, by A.J. Brown, originally published in 1894. The 3-color cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. The booklet, printed on 60# opaque paper, contains 240 pages. However, because we use a 2-up format on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, it has all 472 pages from the original book. The book deals with the organization of the county, the Indians who lived in the area and their removal, early white settlers, the settlement of Decatur, the county seat and attempts to move it, schools and churches, railroads, five chapters on the Civil War period, several chapters on the reconstruction era troubles, newspapers, prominent men, secret societies, various towns, county officers and judges, and miscellaneous events. Although the book does not have a biography section, it does contain names of numerous early Newton County residents. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb . New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11". Private Press.
