Portland, Maine: Bailey & Noyes,, 1865 926 pages, two large folding maps, large folding Frontispiece-bird's eye of Portland. Boune in 1/4 leather and marbled paper boards by the Boston Athenaeum, likely upon at its gifting to the BA (The following is from the bookplate (CANCELLED) on the verso of the front cover)"From the Income of the Fund given by John Bromfield of Boston Merchant, b 1779 d 1849. Received (handwritten date) Nov 30, 1865". Another bookplate underneath concerning rules of the BA, Signed inscription by 'Russell Colesworthy Squires' 5 lines on the facing page, and a date at the bottom: 3/6/1958, another cancelled stamp on the title page. Center map near fine with cloth backing, frontispiece view with mild wear, (quite nice), Falmouth Neck map with much wear/chipping at many creases. Fair to Good overall on this very rare/scarce Maine history. Nice Association example with ties to an early wealthy Bostonian and the Athenaeum. NOTES: John Bromfield was an American philanthropist and merchant. He is noted for his philanthropic ventures regarding non profitable organizations of Boston, such as Boston Athenæum, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the McLean Asylum.
Background
John Bromfield was born on April 11, 1779 in Newburyport, Massachussets, and was the son of John and Ann (Roberts) Bromfield. His father was a descendant of a family of merchants, of whom the first came to Boston from England in 1675.
