A history of the present, a contemporary historian writing primarily as a witness to the events he is treating, as an outside as well as an inside witness--on Bosnia, Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechoslovakia, Germany, France, Vaclav Havel, Mikhail Gorbachev, etc. The quality of writing makes it also good literature. Clean, tight and solid volume, edges rubbed. Internals very clean and free of any markings except a small pale lib stamp on the ffep, and a circular lib sticked on the rear paste-down. Stamp on top edge of text block. Jacket very clean, unclipped, no edgewear. 450 pages. 8vo. 2000, Random House, New York

Synopsis

Timothy Garton Ash is the author of The File, In Europe's Name, and three volumes of "history of the present": The Polish Revolution (winner of the Somerset Maugham Award), The Uses of Adversity (for which he was awarded the Prix Européen de l'Essai), and The Magic Lantern, his personal account of the revolutions of 1989, which has now appeared in fifteen languages. A Fellow of Saint Antony's College, Oxford, he lives in Oxford with his wife and two sons. From the Hardcover edition.
