About This Item

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, first paperback edition, 1988. Laminated illustrated wrappers, 8vo, 23 cm,. viii, 288 pp, ills. From the blurb: "With the exception of famine, scurvy is probably the nutritional deficiency disease that has caused the most human suffering in recorded history. Scurvy plagued sailors on long ocean voyages and broke out whenever groups of people had to be supplied from a considerable distance, as in the California gold rush, the American Civil War, and Arctic expeditions. It also appeared as a "disease of affluence" in the 1880s among infants receiving proprietary foods as substitutes for breast-feeding. In this book, Professor Carpenter surveys the long and fascinating history of the theories about the cause of this strange disease, and illustrates how the changing ideas about scurvy here reflected the central scientific and medical beliefs in each period. The History of Scurvy and Vitamin C is the first full-length treatment of the subject to be written in over 60 years. It is an engrossing story in the history of science and medicine that spans five centuries. Near Very Good.
