About This Item

Full contemporary calf with five raised bands to spine, and leather labels to compartments two and three. Only vols VI and VII have intact title labels, the others are either partially or totally lost. The volume numbers are all present but worn. General wear, rubbing and staining to bindings. All boards attached; a few straining at joints but firmly held. Vol II cracked along length of spine and Vol. I starting. Vol. II headband hanging by a thread. Page edges age-toned and soiled, especially top. Armorial device to front pastedowns of all except VII. Minor insect damage to I and II. Back free endpapers partially torn out of I, II and IV. Some minor browning to paper but contents generally clean without inscriptions, foxing or other markings. Additional photos available on request or these can be viewed on my listing. The third and last of Samuel Richardson's great epistolary novels, 'The History of Sir Charles Grandison' was one of the most popular and important novels of the 18th century. It was one of Jane Austen's favourites and influenced her writing. She even attempted to turn it into a play, the manuscript of which was discovered after her death and eventually published in 1980. Heavy set. U.K. postage at default charge but overseas buyers will be asked for extra. Enquiries welcome. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured.
