Asa and his brother Chester, it is expalined, traveled in Michigan and met with numerous Slayton descendants there. Also, there was a family reunion in East Brookfield, MA, in 1895, with group photo in front of John M Howe house. Two pages of facsimilie dated autographs follow: 1771-1898. The author wrote extensively, and with humor, about the book's plan, sources, history of the name, and similar names, and of migration of members. He also wrote of the characteristics of the Slaytons, which included "the overthrow of slavery and of the distillery". After listing an expense record of a journey that was not free of fermented brew, he wrote: "Who can say that our ancestors did not travel by steam, or steam when they traveled, in those sober New England days? " Letters (6) tucked in, which when folded formed their own envelopes, date from 1817 and were saved by Ora and Clarissa Slayton of So. Woodstock VT, one expressing remorse to Clarissa on Ora's death (June 1930). An historic treasure trove. This is an original, though fragile, it is readable, and NOT a digital or print-on-demand edition. The family letters are unique to this offering.
