About This Item

Hartford: H. Huntington, 1837., 1837. First edition. First edition. Second printing with the added Texas material. Two volumes in one. Thick 8vo. Original full tree calf with the titles stamped in gilt on the spine, 370 pp., plus 230 pp., all edges marbled, frontispiece, illustrated, maps. Streeter, Bibliography of Texas 1285: “This is an excellent contemporary account of the Texas Revolution and its beginnings, written by Loraine Thompson Pease of Enfield, Connecticut, father of Elisha M. Pease….This account includes reprintings of the Declaration of Independence, Burleson’s report on the taking of Bexar in December, 1835, the Travis letter of February 24, 1836, and several other reports and documents. One of these is a reprinting (p. 329-335), which I do not recollect having seen elsewhere, of the report of Benjamin H. Holland, Captain of the 2nd Company of Artillery, on the Fannin Massacre….I am inclined to think the value of this contemporary account of the Texas Revolution, compiled by the father of one of the participants…has been overlooked.” Raines, Bibliography of Texas p. 163: “A well written and reliable volume; now scarce.” Extremely scarce, especially with the fine Texas map. Spine rebacked with a portion of the original spine laid down, lightly foxed throughout, with some light professional restoration to the maps by a master paper conservator. Overall a good+ item, extremely scarce, especially with the fine Texas map.
