About This Item

London: Hutchinson & Co., 1904. Cloth. Very Good. 7" by 4.5". George Cruikshank. A later reprint of Fielding's popular novel complete in two volumes, with delightful gilt spines. Hailed as being one of the first English books to be described as a novel 'The History of Tom Jones' was first published in 1749. It is a vast work, spanning eighteen books, and stylistically a Bildungsroman, depicting the central character's mental and moral coming-of-age. The novel presents many aspects of life at the time, set during the Jacobite rising of 1745, and the style of the narration is most personable. Henry Fielding (1707-1754) was an English writer and dramatist, remembered for founding the first intermittently funded and full-time police force; his writing was generally satirical and comedic by nature. Illustrated by George Cruikshank (1792-1878), a British caricaturist and illustrator, most renowned for his work for Charles Dickens and on 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman'.Complete in two volumes. With wonderful gilt spines. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with a little wear to the head and tail of the spine and boards. Internally, binding is a little tender. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good

Synopsis

A foundling of mysterious parentage brought up by Mr. Allworthy on his country estate, Tom Jones is deeply in love with the seemingly unattainable Sophia Western, the beautiful daughter of the neighboring squire—though he sometimes succumbs to the charms of the local girls. When Tom is banished to make his own fortune and Sophia follows him to London to escape an arranged marriage, the adventure begins. A vivid Hogarthian panorama of eighteenth-century life, spiced with danger and intrigue, bawdy exuberance and good-natured authorial interjections, Tom Jones is one of the greatest and most ambitious comic novels in English literature. Includes a chronology, suggestions for further reading, notes, glossary, and an appendix of Fielding's revisions Introduction discusses narrative tecniques and themes, the context of eighteenth-century fiction and satire, and the historical and political background of the Jacobite revolution
