Alphonso Smith Collection of American Literature, front inner hinge starting, very old waterstaining, final leaf torn, else very good. HOWES U-13, "aa." Dornbusch II:803. Presentation inscription from the author on recto of frontis.: "Prof. C. Alphonse Smith with the compliments of The Author, Apl. 2, 1907." Nevins I, p.171. Underwood was Assistant Surgeon in the 26th North Carolina Infantry. He includes much information about the role played by North Carolina troops at Gettysburg.
