About This Item

Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1842. In the days after the Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1816) surveyor and cartographer W.-B. Craan was able to interview many officers, from both sides, as they recovered from their wounds in Brussels. From their descriptions of the battle, Craan drew up this detailed map of the battlefield, adding his own interpretive notes. These were published together in Brussels in September 1816. Evaluated by many of the high-ranking leaders of the participating armies, the map was deemed to be accurate in its detail, and retains its significance since it includes some facts forgotten or ignored by later military historians. The next year was published in London "An Historical Account of the Battle of Waterloo: Fought on the 18th of June, 1815, intended to Elucidate the Topographical Plan" with further explanatory notes by Capt. Arthur Gore [T. Parker, 1817; S. Leigh, 1817]). The copy offered here is the original Brussels edition, along with the original explanatory note (both map points and note in French). Both are folded in sections which have been stabilized on woven cloth backings and are contained within an 19th c. custom slipcase (half-leather over marbled boards with gilt titles and raised bands); the map is in 15 sections (stabilized on gray cloth) and the notes are in 9 sections (stabilized on cream cloth) some rubbing to slipcase extremities and separation at sides (crude repair can be undone); the plan is in excellent original condition with light rubbing at the edges where it has been folded; the same is true of the notes, with one gray line in sections 3 and six (not interfering with the readability of the text this exceptional survival, rare outside libraries, comes from the collection of Edward Lathem, longtime director of the Dartmouth College Libraries photos and provenance on request
