From Wikipedia (translation): "Alfred Hermann Friedrich Vagts (* 1892 in Basbeck ( 1986) were a poet, a historian and an author of military-historical works. In the First World War Vagts company leader was and received the iron cross of first and second class. As a representative of the advice of the officers it participated 1917 in the peace negotiations in Brest Litowsk. After the war Vagts worked as a historian on Institut for foreign policy of the University of Hamburg. After the Nazis came to power, Vagts emigrated, first to Great Britain and then into the USA. Vagts was a sharp critic of the national socialism, expressed itself in addition, against the surface bombardment of German cities in the Second World War.
