The U-Boat was the pride of the German fleet, and the Nazi leaders knew how important was the success of their underwater warfare. Hitler gave orders that every U-Boat loss should be reported to him immediately. In August 1941, however, there was a loss for which Doenitz could not account. The submarine U-570 suddenly vanished off the face of the ocean. Some time later, German Intelligence received alarming reports that a ghost U-Boat was operating against her sister ships! U-570 had, in fact been "captured" by a British aircraft - one of the only two German submarines that ever surrendered - and she was now fighting the wolf packs as H.M.S. Graph. She actually sank another U-Boat.
The author, peace-time writer and war-time naval officer, has had access to both British and German official records, and by tracking down survivors and hearing their first-hand accounts, has pieced together the full fascinating story of what U-570 was meant to do, how it was captured from the air, what happened to its captain, its amazing career as a "properly commissioned ship in His Majesty's Navy", and its eventual fate.
Her for the first time of telling, is perhaps the most astonishing but true naval story of the last war.
