Rutland, Vermont / Tokyo, Japan: The Charles E. Tuttle Company, 1959. . 4to. 286 pp. Very good with marginal tearing to dust jacket and rubbing to printed cardboard slipcase. Hard covers with red and purple cloth covered boards and printed dust jacket. Includes color plates. Fourth printing. From the Collection of Steve Reoutt (1938-2008). A longtime California College of the Arts Graphic Design faculty member (41 years to be exact) and professor emeritus, Reoutt also was a book illustrator, curator, painter, and genuinely appreciated and loved member of the CCA community. He was born in 1938 in Shanghai to Russian parents. He came to the United States when he was just 12 years old. He went on to cofound the San Francisco chapter of the AIGA, including serving a nine-year board position as design historian. In 2001 Reoutt received the AIGA Fellowship award for “personal and professional contributions to raising the standards of excellence within our design community." He passed away May 14, 2008.
Synopsis
The Hokusai Sketchbooks: Selections from the Manga was first compiled and published in 1958. Katsushika Hokusai was a very famous artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period in Japan. This specific collection contains artwork that Michener considered most significant from the 15 volumes of the Hokusai Manga.
