About This Item

Boston: The Christopher Publishing House, 1933. First edition. 8vo, 99pp. Black cloth lettered in gilt, orange and black printed jacket. Signed, inscribed, and dated by Gaebelein in 1941 to Paul Petzoldt on the ffep. Very good with boards slightly bowed and some some moisture staining to rear board. Jacket good with moisture staining to underside, loss at corners and heel of spine with some chipping along the top edge. Interesting association copy of this uncommon work of fiction from Frank Ely Gaebelein (1899-1983), American evangelical author and first headmaster of the Stony Brook School in New York. Gaebelein was also an accomplished mountaineer, his papers in the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming, mention several climbs with the Alpine Club of Canada in Switzerland, France, Mexico, and the Wind River Range of Wyoming. Influential American Climber, Paul Petzoldt (1908-1999) is listed as being the earliest to ascend the South Ridge of Mount Koven in the Wind River Range in 1933. Frank Gaebelein climbed the East Face in 1942, the year after this book was inscribed, the two likely becoming acquainted via this and/or other climbs. (Joe Kelsey. Climbing and Hiking in the Wind River Mountains. Falcon Guides, 2013). The work itself is a bit of an oddity for Gaebelein, most of his other books Christian in content. This is a short fiction on the game of chess, described on the back panel as "...a thrilling tale with a well-plotted element of mystery and a subtle interplay of psychological forces." The work is scarce with 9 holdings located by OCLC, and is likely more so in jacket and inscribed.
