First edition, first printing, of this installment in the Hollow Tree series featuring humanized animals with striking line illustrations by series illustrator Condé. Following the bucolic lives and adventures of animals in the wild who have been anthropomorphized while retaining distinctive animal characteristics, in the same tradition as WIND IN THE WILLOWS and the works of Beatrix Potter, but in an American setting. This is an unusually nice copy. Octavo. 7.75'' x 5.5''. Original dark green pictorial cloth stamped in orange, black, and cream with anthropomorphized animal knocking on a door in a tree. Fore-edge and bottom edge uncut. Illustrated by Condé with more than 75 full-page black-and-white images. "I-Q" on copyright page. 290 pages. White lettering on spine rubbed, with some rubbing to white on front board. Interior bright.
