Hollyhocks and Goldenglow by Elbert Hubbard, 1912. # 531 of 1000.
This scarce antiquarian book measures 7 3/8" x 5 1/4" and has 158 pages. The text body in set in Scotch roman and printed on Strathmore paper in two colors. The edition of 1000, shown above, bound in stamped flexible leather. The regular edition was also bound in stamped flexible leather. Additional binding variants include paper over boards, full Levant and a stamped stiff variegated leather similar to a Levant leather binding. The stiff variegated leather bound book was printed in four colors on Strathmore paper.
Condition: 158pp. Duodecimo [19 cm] Limp brown leather wraps, lettered and ornamentally embossed on the front cover. Top edge gilt; other edges deckled. Brown endpapers. Tipped-in frontispiece portrait of Elbert Hubbard. Good . The leather is heavily rubbed and chipped at the spine and along the edges, and the front cover is beginning to detach at the base.Many of the pages have dark stains in the bottom fore edge corners.

The Roycroft artisan community founded by Elbert Hubbard in East Aurora, New York was the first and most successful purveyor of Arts and Crafts in the nation.

The edition consisted of 150 copies; it was a student project, done while Richie attended Frank Wiggins Trade School in Los Angeles. The choice of a Carl Sandburg poem is significant, as Sandburg and Richie shared a longtime friendship with Los Angeles bookseller and publisher, Jake Zeitlin.
