A reissue, with different title pages, of the 1789-90 edition. Hardcover. Bound in full leather. At 15 lbs., 17" tall x 10.5" wide x 3.5" thick, this is a very large, very heavy Bible. Covers are a plain, deep red/brown leather. Nicely rebacked spine is a dark tan bearing six raised bands, and appears to hold the original title label affixed with blind stamped lettering. New endpapers. Leaves are a laid paper with black text. Dual columned. Illustrated with approximately 90 or 91 full page engravings in black and white throughout. Includes an "Index to the Holy Bible, or an Account of the Most Remarkable Passages in the Books of the Old and New Testaments: Pointing to the Time wherein they happened" at the back. Unpaginated. Chapter number and name headers throughout. Herbert 1365. ESTC Citation: T123285. <br><br>CONDITION: Overall VG, especially for its age. Rebacked spine is very nicely done, as hinges are strong and binding is quite sound. Title page has been repaired with tape at the bottom. General external wear and scratching as to be expected for this 1791 copy. Leaves have toned with moderate foxing throughout, yet predominantly unmarked except for a previous owner's name on the preface page. Some chipping along the edges of the first several pages, and there are tears at the bottom of pages containing I Kings 10 and the following illustration, as well as on the page containing St. John 8. Even still, this is an absolutely remarkable, antiquarian copy and a perfect heirloom Bible or alter Bible for any church. A solid, handsome, very readable copy.
