About This Item

Hodder and Stourton Limited, London, 1930. 6th Edition or Higher. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 6th Edition (1st in this form) xix, 348 pages, 10 maps and plans. Original covers, no dust jacket. Shelfwear, covers stained, some minor spotting, mainly to page edges, contents clean. A neat concise volume of this expedition. A participant in Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition (1907-09), Mawson went on to lead his own expedition from his native Australia to an area of the Antarctic previously unexplored, departing in December 1911. At the end of 1912 disaster struck when one member of his three-man sub-team fell into a crevasse with most of their sled dogs and supplies. Mawson and Xavier Mertz began the 480km trek back to base, but Mertz fell victim to vitamin A poisoning from the dog's livers they were forced to eat, and died before they reached their goal. In this book Mawson records his extraordinary survival experiences. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Quantity Available: 1.
