Description: This is a volume from the Time Life World War II series. This volume takes you behind the scenes to meet the men in power -- from aristocratic Roosevelt to Donald M Nelson of Hannibal, Missouri who made good at Sears, Roebuck and went on to head the War Production Board, which regulated the manufacture of everything from refrigerators to rubber balls. America, after Pearl Harbor, was at first worried about air attack. Air-raid drills became a part of life. But the attacks never came (other than a lone Japanese pilot, launched from a sub off the West Coast, who attempted to set the Northwest woods aflame with two incendiary bombs)-- and Americans settled down to four long years of coping with the shortages and challenges of a wartime economy, An old America was dying and new one being born. Hundreds of nostalgic photographs assembled by the staff of Time Life Books take you to the heart of life on the home front.
