About This Item

East Hampton, Long Island, New York: Ladies' Village Improvement Society; East Hampton Star Press, 1939. Double Wire-O Binding (24 x 16 cm.), 90, [22] pages. Index really a Table of Contents. Advertisements. Section at rear for "My Own Recipes" to be added. FIRST EDITION. There was an earlier publication with the same name by the L.V.I.S. issued in 1924, but that was a separate work. A community cookbook, with attributed recipes and advertisements for local businesses. Most recipes are offered in narrative form, with the ingredients and steps in a single paragraph. Cocktail recipes, however, appear in the more contemporary format with ingredients and steps on different lines. The East Hampton Ladies' Village Improvement Society was founded in 1895 and issued its first cookbook the following year. Numerous different cookbooks have been issued since, with the most recent issued in 2020. Each had a "dual purpose - to preserve the best and most typical Eastern Long Island dishes, an to add to the funds with which the L.V.I.S. carries on its work of caring for village trees and greens, and other worthy projects" (from the preface). A few small spots and a bit of dog ear-ing to text block. Red paper covers, printed in black show some edge wear and a closed tear; laminate starting to peel. Near very good. [OCLC locates eleven copies; not in Brown].
