Scripturae, Vocabulorum; Quibus MANTISSAE loco accessit APPENDIX Continens Syllogen Testimoniorum de HOMERO, et variis Autoribus, qua Antiquis, qua Neotericis collectam] James Duport's Homeri Gnomologia, "deservedly esteemed by classical scholars, consists of a collection of all the sentences in the ' Iliad T and 'Odyssey' containing any aphorism, sentiment, or remarkable opinion, illustrated by a twofold series of quotations, first from the scriptures, and next from the whole range of classical authors. James Duport -- student, graduate, and tutor at Trinity College Cambridge -- reflects the educational philosophy and relationship between students and their tutors in the first half of the 17th century. In 1943, G. M. Trevelyan published Duport's "Rules for Students" established when he was tutor at Trinity College, Cambridge between 1635 and 1664. Duport is best known by this work, his Homeri gnomologia (1660), a collection of all the aphorisms, maxims, and remarkable opinions in the Iliad and Odyssey, illustrated by quotations from the Bible and classical literature." The seventeenth century literary culture began to move away from the Greet Heroic tradition, a period that marks the end of the high Elizabethan style." "Duport deserves the credit of having done much to keep alive the study of classical literature in his day." Bishop Monk says that Duport ' appears to have been the main instrument by which literature was upheld in this university [Cambridge] during the civil dissensions in the seventeenth century" Though not widely recognized now, "he enjoyed an almost transcendent reputation for a great length of time among his contemporaries, as well as in the generation which immediately succeeded.'
