About This Item
Paris: Impr. Curcros et Colas, Rene Kieffer, Editor, 1926. Limited Edition. Octavo. No pagination. Limited to 500 copies of which this a "Reserve copy" for H. Monnier and signed by the publisher Rene Kieffer. Pochoir art was at its height in Paris in the early 20th Century and no publisher produced more of them than Rene Kieffer. One of the masters of the art form was Jean-Paul Quint (1884-1953) who used this technique in illustrating Balzac's work. The stunning pochoir are often spread out over two pages creating a "stage" for the text, which is entirely in French. Custom made paper with watermark on title page and other pages with "Editions Rene Kieffer". From 1922 to 1928, La Quint and Kieffer worked together creating some of the finest books aimed at the bibliophile collector (limited editions of Blaise Cendars [see the Morgan copy].) the Voltaire, as well as the Balzac versions. The process of creating each work has been well described and today it is considered too costly both in time and materials to produce. A stunning copy bound in self jacketed wrappers lettered and decorated in red, black, blue, olive, and white. An absolute fine copy.
