New York: Simon and Schuster. Very Good in Fair dj. 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. [good sound copy, light dampstaining to top of text block, severe fading to cloth at various extremities where the dust jacket has chipped away; ownership signature on front endpaper (Ned Glass, possibly the character actor of the same name?); the jacket is torn and heavily chipped along top of front panel and at spine extremties, with some dampstaining along the top edge of the rear panel]. The author's third book, collecting 28 of his short stories, all of which had appeared in such magazines as Collier's, The New Yorker, The American Mercury, Story, and others. Per the jacket blurb: "Some have been edited, some have been considerably rewritten. They range in subject matter from mother love to murder, in locale from the slums to the mountaintops, in style from the classic to the modern, and in treatment from the urbane to bludgeoning realism." The volume also includes a special preface by the author. .
