Stringer & Townsend, New York, 1857. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Size: 4to. 2-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Rebound in red gilt ruled leather with five raised bands on spine, top edges gilt, inside of covers are leather bound as well, silk free end papers, the original front and back covers are bound in as well as the back strip (front cover has a very bright and nice gilt illustration with two horses, original back strip is illustrated as well in gilt with the title "The Horse of America" Frank Forester); Volume I, steel engraved vignette title page "The Horse of America" by Frank Forester, designed by F. O.C. Darley and engraved by R. Hinshelwood, errata sheet to both volumes tipped in, 552 pages, illustrated with 8 steel engraved portraits of celebrated horses and 13 wood engravings executed by N. Orr, List of Authorities Consulted in Used in the Preparation of This Work; Volume II, steel engraved vignette title (different from the one in Volume I) designed by F. O.C. Darley and engraved by J. Smillie, 6 steel engraved portraits of celebrated horses, 43 wood engravings executed by N. Orr, 576 pages, Index. Both volumes have two previous owner bookplates, those of William Baylis jun. and Abraham Burtis Baylis. Volume I, covers stained, leather worn on both sides of spine, corners, spine ends and along edges, vignette title page is moderately foxed, title page lightly foxed, damp stain along bottom edges of pages in blank margin, some of the steel engravings have foxing in blank margins while others have none, offsetting from engraving on to facing page, text pages generally not foxed, rear cover has short separation at head of spine; Volume II, covers scuffed/scratched/stained, leather worn along sides of spine, along edges, spine ends and corners, vignette title is foxed, foxing situation in text similar to that in Volume I, both covers have slight separation at gutter at head of spine.
