About This Item

New York: Random House, 1940. Cloth. Very Good +/Very Good +. Dr. Seuss. The presumed 1940 1st edition, 2nd state (with the 200/200 price, the Madison Avenue address, the absence of the bird to the dustjacket's front cover and the absence of the first printing statement). Nonetheless, a sharp, very serviceable copy of this earliest possible state other than the 1st state (Younger and Hirsch, pgs. 85-87). Clean and VG+ (light creasing and just a touch of very faint staining to the front panel's lower-edge) in a crisp, price-clipped, Near Fine dustjacket. Very handsome, even uncommon as such.

Synopsis

Horton Hatches the Egg is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, first published in 1940. The book, along with Horton Hears a Who later provided the thrust of the plot for the Broadway musical Seussical. The character Horton appeared again in Horton Hears a Who!, published in 1954. Plot summary The book concerns an elephant named Horton, who is convinced by an irresponsible bird named Mayzie to sit on her egg while she takes a short "break", which proves to last for months.
