About This Item

U.S.A.: Portland, 1988 Portland House Classics Series, first edition, first printing 1988, near fine with some wear to top and tip of spine, very light rub to corners, tipped in illustration by Sergio Martinez which has some scratching, else fine. Illustrated in Colour by Sergio Martinez and in black and white by Sydney Paget. No writing or marks. Acqua boards with gold lettering and silhouettes of a cloaked figure and the hound. Forest green endpapers. These were a welldesigned and very attractive series, engaging the best of designers and illustrators.

Synopsis

Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead and Sherlock Holmes is called upon to protect his heir, Sir Henry Baskerville. Narrating the story, Holmes’s assistant Dr. Watson is sent to Dartmoor to investigate the unsettling tale of the Hound of the Baskervilles. This legend warns the descendants of the Baskerville family never to venture out on the moors that surround their ancestral home, or they will meet the beast that lurks in the shadows.    Though the story may seem unbelievable, a man is dead and footprints of a giant hound are found nearby. Sherlock and Dr. Watson agree to dig deeper into the truth of the matter and will discover that nothing is quite as it seems.   The most famous of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles was serialized in The Strand Magazine in 1901-02 and soon published to book form in 1902. Wildly popular, this novel has been adapted for film numerous times, starting with a silent German production in 1914.

Reviews

On Apr 20 2021, a reader said:
The dialogue was cleverly written. Poor punctuation, however, made it difficult to read aloud, which is a disservice to the content. I suspect I could have invested in a better copy: the moths on the cover of my copy made the killer obvious upon his initial introduction. Nevertheless, this is a great case study on how to write a satisfying murder mystery.
