About This Item

San Francisco: Dennis McMillan, 1983. Pp. [iv]+286, frontispiece (reproducing the dust wrapper from the 1929 Dorrance edition), pictorial endpapers, designed by William L. McMillan, printed in orange & red; red cloth, spine and upper board lettered in gilt; dust wrapper, illustrated by George Barr; Dennis McMillan, San Francisco, 1983. Second U.S. [pirated] edition, being a reprint of the 1929 Dorrance edition. *Upfield's first book, originally published in London by Hutchinson in 1928, and in America by Dorrance in 1929. This edition, the first title to be published under Dennis McMillan's imprint, was issued without the consent of Bonaparte Holdings, who hold the copyright to Upfield's work. In his introduction, Philip Jose Farmer describes the book as 'Upfield's pre-osteomatic novel' [ie, 'pre-Bony'], because it does not feature Detective Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte.
