About This Item
[London]: [s.n.], [1844]. 28pp, [2]. Docket title to verso of final leaf. Interleaved throughout. Contemporary straight-grain black morocco, tooled in gilt and blind, A.E.G. Rubbed, some surface loss to boards, chipping to head of spine, joints starting. Marbled endpapers, armorial bookplate of C. Pountz Stewart to FEP, later manuscript note pasted to same. A remarkably rare survival of the proceedings within the House of Lords regarding the case of Augustus Frederick D'Este (1794-1848) who sought to claim his deceased father's title. D'Este the son of Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex (1773â1843), and Lady Augusta Murray (bap. 1761, d. 1830). Their marriage, which took place in Rome and was repeated in London in 1793, was declared invalid under the terms of the Royal Marriages Act, and the relationship ended late in 1801. D'Este was subsequently raised by his mother to think of himself as a prince, resulting in a lifelong preoccupation with his status. In 1834 he petitioned the duke of Cambridge to intercede with the king for recognition of his legitimacy, and on the duke of Sussex's death, in 1843, he made a claim to succeed to his father's honours. In neither attempt was he successful. COPAC records a single copy (Oxford); OCLC adds no further. . First edition. Folio.
