About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1943. Together with typescript inscribed by the author First edition, first impression, and typescript. The typescript, which precedes the publication in book form by a year, is inscribed by Ustinov on the title page. In the top fore corner: "In memoriam, a great goose, ever, Peter A. Ustinov, 32 William Mew, Knigtsbridge, London SW1"; and again at the bottom of the page "No longer property of Peter Ustinov, 137 Kensington Close, Wright's Lane, London W8." First performed at the Arts Theatre on 6 October 1942, House of Regrets was Ustinov's (1921-2004) first play, a partially autobiographical tragicomedy about the experiences of Russian émigrés living in London. Two volumes, octavo and quarto (252 x 205 mm). Original black cloth, titles to spine in silver. With dust jacket. Carbon copy typescript in original cloth-backed black wrappers, printed label to front wrapper, titles to spine in black. Housed in a black cloth flat back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Boards very gently bowed, extremities a touch rubbed. An excellent copy in a price-clipped jacket with light tanning to spine panel and upper edges, minor chipping to head of spine and folds, a small hole to upper fore corner of rear panel. Together with a very good typescript with lightly chipped wrappers, tape repairs along hinges and upper fore corner of rear wrapper, printed label tanned and with small chip to one corner, a closed tear to fore margin of p. 20, Act 3, and fore edges of pp. 35-6, Act 3 slightly nicked.
