One fold-out plan of "Model Plan for a County Prison," Jos. Billings, Architect. House....No. 157. Commonwealth of Massachusetts. House of Representative, April 14, 1849. REPORT: The Joint Standing Committee on Prisons, to whom were referred sundry documents, relating to the State Prison; also orders of the House, authorizing them to "visit and examine the County Prisons, and to report such plans as they might deem expedient for their improvement, with specifications of the same." This report includes a history and philosophy of prison systems; an overview of the State Prison, Houses of Correction at Ipswich, South Boston, East Cambridge, and New Bedford; County Jails at Ipswich, Salem, and Boston; suggested improvements in the discipline of several prisons and in its mode of administration; improvement of the jail buildings; and a model plan for a county prison. An exlibrary copy from Cape Cod's historic Sturgis Library in Barnstable, Massachusetts, the oldest library building in the country. Library marks include removable barcode and reference sticker, along with erasable pencil notations on title page. Originally part of the collections of Percy Fielitz Rex of Muhlenberg College and Yale Divinity School, and bears his bookplate. Minor shelfwear. Clean and tight. A near fine copy. RARE.. Cloth.
