About This Item
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1952. Near Fine, scant shelf rub bottom edge, in a Near Fine dust jacket, small chips at head of spine. From the library of James Armsey, ( 1918-2008) who was the Ford Foundation executive who oversaw grants to universities and colleges in the 1960s, with the only requirement that they had to raise matching funds from other sources. At his urging the Foundation added the requirement that the colleges and universities could not bar black students. This change caused a number of them, including Duke University, Vanderbilt University, Emory University, Tulane University, and several major private colleges, to admit black students for the first time. Armsey's name and gift inscription from his wife front paste down, hidden by front flap. Basis for the 1962 Broadway play starring Robert Morse and Rudy Vallee, the 1967 film also starring Robert Morse and Rudy Vallee, as well as the 1975 TV movie of the same title. . First Printing. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
