Twain, Mark [Clemens, S. L.] HOW TO TELL A STORY AND OTHER ESSAYS. New York: Harper, 1897. First edition. Original red decorated cloth, gilt, top edge gilt, uncut. A bright crisp copy, near fine. An uncommon title due to the unusually low press run of just 2,000 copies. All copies of the first edition have the misprint ("ciper" for "cipher") in the text; this was not corrected until the book was reprinted. Also, copies of this book without "1897" on the title-page are later editions (not merely "second states" of the first edition) but are often misrepresented as first editions. This volume was the first of only two collections of his essays published during his lifetime, including several of his best: his thoughts on the art of story-telling, his famous critical essay on James Fenimore Cooper, his history of the Jumping Frog story, and his personal account of an instance of mental telepathy.
