VG- (ex-library with bookplate, call number inked on spine, accession stamp, and circulation card. additionally, title page, frontispiece, plate 1, and glossy full page illustrations have been marked with a perforation stamp, and the rest of the photogravure plates have been marked with a blind stamp in corner of image surface. cover loosening at front hinge. a few spots of red dye on front cover. slight wear to cloth, particularly at edges and corners. some bumps to bottom edge of front cover. pages are clean). Blue cloth with gilt embossing. Top edge gilt. 136 pp. 16 photogravures and many other bw illustrations. Oversize. Monograph on Sir Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914), a British painter of German descent, who was a member of Royal Academy, Royal Water-Colour Society and the Royal Engravers. He was better known around the turn of the century, but his Victorian Academic style has since fallen out of favor. Especially notable are his portraits and works of (sentimental) social realism, and his experiments in film.
