About This Item
Edinburgh & London: Blackwood, 1848. Second Edition.. Original dark green straight-ribbed cloth, covers stamped in blind at borders, spine designed and lettered in gilt. Light yellow coated end papers. Frontispiece and three inserted plates, as well as illustrations in the text. One leaf of ads bound at the front, half-title leaf present. Short splits along upper hinges, but a bright and attractive copy in unusually nice condition, the plates unfoxed. A bookseller's ticket on the inner front cover is from Dublin, and an ownership inscription on the front fly leaf is signed at Dundalk Barracks [Ireland], dated 1851. This copy is of the variety which does not have blind-stamped corner ornaments on the corners of the binding, as called for by Quayle [Ib]; we are aware of otherwise identical copies in both varieties of the binding, and no priority is assumed. This is what Quayle refers to as the Second Edition (First published edition); the first edition was published earlier in 1848, issued for Private Circulation only. This second edition is entirely reset, with many corrections and changes to the text. Ballantyne's first book, based on his experiences as a Hudson's Bay Co. clerk during 1841-1847. Quayle 1b. Arctic Bibliography 1016. Sabin 2952.
