About This Item
Kansas City: Lowell Press, 1976. First Edtion Stated . Trade Paperback. Very Good/Very Good. 8 1/2" X 11. Hulings, Clark. Unusual attractive dust jacket for this paperback edition. Clark Hulings received an invitation from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City to create a major collection of new works for an historic one-man exhibition and sale to be held at the Cowboy Hall. He selected thirty-five oil paintings for the show and that collection appears in this book. The viewer can see the influence of an early childhood in Spain. Hulings, who now resides in Santa Fe, has poignantly portrayed the weathered adobes, the village people, the burros laden with their loads, the cobblestone streets, the laborers in distant fields. Other locales and subjects have been as faithfully captured and as equally enriched by Hulings' brush: a majestic panorama of the Grand Canyon, a Paris flower market splashed in subtle hues, a Louisiana black man named Joe, and others. Clark Hulings' paintings have an exquisite simplicity .about them, a serenity that is delicately enhanced by impeccable craftsmanship. The use of light and texture, however, are the traits that most distinguish a Hulings' painting. He is masterfully skilled at lighting his subject and combining texture to create a perfectly balanced composition that is distinctly his own. The paintings appearing here have been carefully reproduced in full color and are accompanied by the artist's comments on his subject matter and the challenges that were presented. Widely acclaimed for his portrayals of the American West, Hulings brings to these pages a broad perspective, one which has been nurtured by extensive travel and a wealth of experiences. From western America to Europe, with stops in between, enthusiasts of important American art will be pleased these selections.
