London: William Heinemann, 1915. First issue. Hardcover. very good. Small 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering and design to cover and spine. 648pp. 15pp of ads in rear. First issue "help" for helped on line 4 page 257. This is a signed presentation copy on front endpaper, "For Edward Eberhardt this book begins in 1912 and ended in 1914. The M.S. of which rests in the Library of Congress. W. Somerset Maugham. April 1946.". Spine has been professional rebacked with pieces replaced. There is some ink marking at bottom of half-title page; some of which has been erased. Two lines of ink on blank page following front free endpaper.
Synopsis
Of Human Bondage is a novel by W. Somerset Maugham. It is generally agreed to be his masterpiece and to be strongly autobiographical in nature, although Maugham stated, "This is a novel, not an autobiography, though much in it is autobiographical, more is pure invention. " Maugham, who had originally planned to call his novel Beauty from Ashes, finally settled on a title taken from Spinoza's Ethics
