About This Item

BOSTON, MA: HOUGHTON MIFFLIN CO. VERY GOOD+ WITHOUT D.J.. PUB 1898. FIRST EDITION. HARDCOVER. PRESENTATION COPY "FROM THE AUTHOR/ 1898" OF THE BOOK WHICH CONTAINED HIS 1897 "INGERSOLL LECTURE ON HUMAN IMMORTALITY" . PUBLISHER'S BROWN CLOTH COVERED BEVELED BOARDS WITH GILT TITLES TO THE SPINE. BOOK HAS A TRACE OF WEAR AT THE CORNERS BUT IS AN EXCELLENT COPY. This book was presented to Evander Bradley McGilvary (1864-1953) with his signature above the author's presentation on the front free endpaper (2 obviously different hands). McGilvary recieved his PHD from the University of California in 1897 and was an assistant professor of Philosophy from 1897-1898 under Hegelian George Howison. From 1905-1924 he was professor of Philosophy and head of the Dept of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin. He was a proponent of what he called "Perspective Realism". I was able to reconstruct their paths probably crossing in August 1898 when James went to California upon Howison's invitation to address the Philosophical Club at the University of California with a lecture with what he called an "ill-chosen" title of "Philosophical Conceptions and Practical Results" (The Letters of William James Vol 2 pp 79-84)(Encyclopedia of Philosophy Vol 5&6 pp227-229). .
