About This Item

1876 1st/1st Hunting of the Snark Lewis Carroll Illustrated Fantasy Alice Holiday

"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't."

Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Lewis Carroll was the author of numerous children's and fantasy stories in the 19th-century, and none were more famous than 'Alice.' However, Carroll published others such as 'The Hunting of the Snark' – a nonsense poem using words such as 'Jabberwocky', jubjub, and Bandersnatch!

This rare first edition is complete with the nine illustrations by Henry Holiday and features the expected first edition points (noted below).

Synopsis

If-and the thing is wildly possible-the charge of writing nonsense were ever brought against the author of this brief but instructive poem, it would be based, I feel convinced, on the line (in p.4)
