About This Item
This is an antique copy of "Hyperion ~ A Romance" by HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW. Circa 1890's (there is no date of publication stated, but an inscription at the front is dated 1899); David McKay; Philadelphia. This edition is nicely illustrated with 21 full-page photographic plates, each with a descriptive tissue guard. Gilt top page edges. Ribbon page marker. Decorative end papers. An old newspaper article that mentions Longfellow has been taped onto the front end paper.
From a review: "Although less significant than his lyric and epic poetry, Hyperion captures an artist coming into his own within a Romantic tradition flooded with major and minor figures across the globe. (The story) is a fascinating blend of travel narrative, philosophy, and bildungsroman from a writer with a poet's sense of the world."
Condition:
Clean covers and spine. Bright gilt top page edges; bright gilt lettering and decorations on the front cover and spine. Sharp cover corners. There are a couple small scuffs to the cloth at the bottom edge of the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the text pages are lightly age-toned and clean with no notable issues found. There is an inscription written in pen dated 1899 on a front end paper. A newspaper clipping has been affixed to a front end paper with a strip of tape. There is an old bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. The ribbon page marker is present, but has detached. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
Synopsis
Hyperion is one of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's first published works. It was published in 1839, and is a prose romance that follows a young American named Paul Flemming as he travels through Germany. The journey of the character is partially inspired by the death of a friend, and the romance in the tale is based on Longfellow's own failed marriage proposals to his beloved.
