About This Item

New York: E.P. Dutton and Company. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj. (c.1932). First Edition. Hardcover. [light spotting to edges of text block, minor shelfwear only, tiny tear and paper-clip indentation at top edge of ffep; jacket spine lightly browned, shallow chipping at top of spine, very slight paper loss at a couple of corners, all in all much nicer than often seen on this book]. The first book by this newspaper columnist/reporter whose beat for a number of years was the San Diego waterfront. The success of the book (including its adaptation into the 1933 movie of the same name, starring Claudette Colbert and Ben Lyon) led Miller to quit the newspaper game and concentrate on writing books, which he did prolifically for the next twenty years; many were concerned with Southern California or Baja Mexico, and he also wrote on military-related topics. (He served as a writer for the U.S. Navy's Office of Public Information during World War II and the Korean War.) The book was filmed again in 1961 under the title SECRET OF DEEP HARBOR. .
