The author was born in Manheim, Lancaster County, PA. She lived and worked as a school teacher in Philadelphia, and wrote various popular books about the PA Dutch, including: 'Amanda: A Daughter of the Mennonites' (1921); 'Patchwork; a Story of the Plain People' (1920), and this excellent historical romance centered on an early immigrant family to Lancaster, PA. There are lively accounts of the area, and its personalities including: the glassmaker, Baron Henry von Stiegel; the charismatic leader of the Ephrata Cloisters, Conrad Beissel; and the Mennonite Eby family.
