David Herbert Donald won two Pulitzer Prizes for his biographies of Charles Sumner and Thomas Wolfe and was a celebrated biographer of Abraham Lincoln . This book is a tribute by Ruth Randall to her marriage to J. G. Randall , also a celebrated biographer of Abraham Lincoln at the University of Illinois . James Randall supervised David Herbert Donald's dissertation . Aida Donald and Ruth Randall became close friends . The Donalds named their son in honhor of Randall . In this book , Ruth refers to David Herbert Donald as " a member of the family " .
